Airey Taylor Consulting were commissioned to inspect the group of buildings comprising the Slater Homestead located north of Goomalling.  We provided a report of our findings and recommendations for remediation and structural detailing for replacement of the floor.  Reinstatement of the buildings to a satisfactory condition was the core concern, as well as maintaining the important Heritage of the area for the use of current and future generations.

We recommended the upgrade of recently reinstated roofs to ensure adequate wall restraint and membrane action over the barn and house, as well as upgrading the restraint of the tops of the masonry walls in case of an earthquake event. We further recommended that mortars used for wall reinstatement be polymer modified (using products such as Crommelin Crocem 32 or Fosroc Nitobond SBR which replace 50% of the water) for salt resistance and the joints to be rolled not raked.  We also recommended that the chimney to the tavern be restrained by utilising compressive forces to prevent the high level flashing defeating the bonds and compromising structural adequacy, and the floor of the house be replaced using our provided structural detailing.

These measures should ensure that the structural adequacy of this important range of Heritage Buildings be maintained well into the future.
