The State Government over the last few weeks has been in discussions with transport minister Dean Nalder about the long-term viability of tunnelling to ease congestion pressures on busy roads like Canning Highway, Scarborough Beach Road, and Orrong Road.
When the transport minister came out with this idea saying we should consider tunneling under these roads by duplicating them, the project looked too expensive but Mr Nalder insists it might be cost effective to use it within a decade. “It’s definitely something we are starting to consider,” he said to the West Australian.
Peter Airey, principle of forensic engineering at Airey Taylor Consulting weighed in this week on radio 6PR on the feasibility of using tunnels in Perth City.
“[His idea] is entirely relevant, and it would seriously improve the delivery of additional capacity to our highways with out resuming land and doing things that other people hate….”
