A condition report of the existing facilities at Terry Tyzack Aquatic Centre conducted by the City of Stirling in 2017 found that the plant room facilities had degraded beyond their lifespan, and recommended replacement. Additionally increasing membership numbers at the Centre and demand for pool lanes had extended beyond sustainable numbers for the existing pool to meet the growing demand.
In response to these factors the City commissioned an expansion to the outdoor swimming pools in 2020. Airey Taylor Consulting joined regular collaborators Donovan Payne Architects and Commercial Aquatics to deliver the ambitious revision of the popular Centre.
This new expansion included a 50m x 10-lane lap pool and with attached 25m x 4-lane outdoor pool with DDA ramp access and a submersible swim wall. The new 14 lane pool is the largest public outdoor lap pool in the Southern Hemisphere and can accommodate up to 250 swimmers at any one time. Both pools as a collective hold 2.5 million litres of water and are heated to 27.5 degrees In a WA first, the centre uses the AI powered anti-drowning CCTV technology, Lynxight. As well as enhanced outdoor spaces including a grassed park, landscaping, and a BBQ area and new shade sails for sun protection over the pool; the facility now features a completely new plant room with upgraded equipment and a salt system, eliminating the need for chlorine gas.
Structural and Civil challenges faced by the team included the incorporation of an operating crane to service the lights and sunshades on the pool slab concourse. Glass Fibre Reinforced Polymer reinforcement was used for the splash zones and balance tanks of the new pool, which will considerably expand the operating and maintenance lifespans of these areas.
Following delays due to COVID and other pressures, the project was successfully completed and opened on 2 September 2024.
