Peter Airey BE GradDipAdmin FIEAust CPEng RPEQ, Managing Director of Airey Taylor Consulting – presented three papers to the Australasian Structural Engineering Conference of 2018 (held between 25 September – 28 September 2018 at Adelaide Convention Centre). His presentations were for the topic ‘Forensic Engineering – Lessons from failure or success.’
The first of these papers is entitled “Presentation on Failure of Belly Dump Trailers”, and is an examination of the results of forensic engineering studies on mining equipment, which shows a clear need for structural engineering wherewithal and techniques in mechanical equipment design. This presentation was number 144 on the conference program.
“The methodology of the investigation comprised an analysis of the coupling force between the trailers which was performed in Accordance with AS/NZS 4968.1 2003 – Heavy Road Vehicles Mechanical Coupling Between Articulated Vehicle Combinations, Part 1 : Design Criteria and Selection Requirements for Fifth Wheel, Kingpin and Associated Equipment and Australian Design Rule 62/00 Mechanical Connections Between Vehicles). Having applied this we concluded the maximum horizontal design load at the ball joint connection was 320Kn.”
