Airey Taylor Consulting were pleased to provide Structural and Civil Engineering services for this new two storey classroom teaching block for Albany Senior High School which was first built in 1924. Airey Taylor Consulting joined regular collaborators Roberts Gardiner Architects who provided an elegant modern response that reflects and responds to existing campus’ aesthetic.
The new classroom block replaced transportable classrooms for the teaching of science and maths, and provides 200 students with eight general learning areas, two incidental learning areas, a staff study space, and staff and student toilets. The project also involved refurbishment of existing studios for a new STEM laboratory and 3D printer room for marine science and ocean studies. A link at first floor level into the existing school building and new landscaping improved accessibility.
The ground floor is constructed of reinforced concrete slabs on grades with concrete footings, cavity filled brick retaining walls and concrete stairs. The upper floor slab consists of hollow core 150mm planks and reinforced concrete beams for the classrooms and 172mm reinforced concrete slab elsewhere including the link bridge to the adjacent buildings.
The roof construction is conventional steel rafters and columns supporting 150 Zed purlins. There is supporting structure work for fascia trusses and sunshade fins.
Civil Engineering solutions included documentation of roof stormwater disposal systems, stormwater and surface drainage details; with external areas featuring levels, drainage details, retaining walls and other elements to provide a flood parth deviation around the building extension.
Airey Taylor Consulting thank Roberts Gardiner Architects for their ongoing confidence in our designs (continuing our project work on Mt Lockyer Primary School and the Denmark SHS STEM facilities in the region) and Wauters Enterprises for their attention to detail in construction bringing this excellent facility to life for Albany students.
